It is a vinylpyrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer that is soluble both in water and inalcohols.
It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as binders, granulating agents, retarding agents and film forming agents in drugs.

Characteristics

Copolyvidone is a water-soluble organic polymer, a linear copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) and vinyl acetate (VA) (PVP/VA)

White or slightly yellow, non-flowing powder with a weak characteristic odor, almost odorless.

Soluble in all hydrophilic solvents. Solutions with concentrations exceeding 10% can be prepared in water, ethanol, isopropanol, dichloromethane, glycerol, and propylene glycol. Solubility is low in ethers, cycloaliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons.

Application

Stabilizer: PVP copolymers can effectively stabilize active pharmaceutical ingredients and prevent them from degradation due to external factors such as temperature, humidity or light during storage or use.

Solubilizer: The active ingredients of many drugs are difficult to absorb in the body due to their low water solubility, which affects the efficacy. PVP copolymers can improve the solubility and bioavailability of these poorly soluble drugs by forming complexes with drug molecules.

Film Formers: They have good solubility in water and a variety of organic solvents and can form a uniform film by evaporation. This makes them widely used in drug coatings to improve the appearance, taste and stability of drug tablets in the digestive tract.

Binder: When used as a binder, it can enhance the binding force of drug particles and improve the mechanical strength of tablets.

FAQ

1.What impact does PVP copolymer have on drug stability?
They can significantly improve the stability of drugs by forming a stable chemical or physical barrier with the active ingredients of the drug to prevent degradation or deterioration of the drug.

2. Can PVP copolymer be used for sustained-release or controlled-release drugs?
Often used in sustained-release or controlled-release preparations. They can control the release rate of drugs by adjusting their film-forming properties or by being combined with other materials.

3. What are the advantages of PVP copolymer in drug coating?
It can form a uniform protective film and improve the appearance and stability of drugs. They have good adhesion and breathability and can control drug release in the gastrointestinal tract.

4. Are there dosage restrictions on the use of PVP copolymer?
Within the scope of reasonable use, PVP copolymer is safe, and its usage in drugs is clearly stipulated in the pharmacopoeias of most countries and regions.

5. How to store PVP copolymer?
Should be stored in a cool, dry environment and avoid exposure to high temperatures and humidity. Proper storage conditions can effectively extend its service life.
